I am writing this whilst flying from Phnom Penh to Saigon, it’s a 40-minute flight which allows me to reflect on my travels. I’ve had the luxury of bonding with my 18-year-old son Elliot in Cambodia and Vietnam for 10 days. We got to experience some vibrant cities; the temples of Angkor, beautiful islands and some work in between. Elliot was writing and filming for his travel blog, Seeking the Globe, and we visited two Leader in Me schools in Hanoi and Phnom Penh.
It’s quite incredible how you can travel anywhere in the world and find one of our international partner schools – Leader in Me has truest become a global network. Our organisation, the United Education Group, implants the Leader in Me process in UK schools. Leader in Me is a school improvement model that enables schools to implement a process of continuous improvement to create a leadership culture. It empowers teachers to empower pupils to lead their own learning. Children learn 21st century life skills, socio-emotional and self-regulation skills and communication skills. Above all; it’s a process that builds and strengthens the character and leadership skills of all the adults and children in the school. It’s about educating the whole child so that school becomes meaningful and more relevant to the child.
At this time of the year, when many children are feeling pressure of exams. Leader in Me enables the child to be more resilient and in control of themselves. True education is much more than academics, it should never be all about test scores. Getting an A grade is not going to be enough, robotic skills will be redundant in the knowledge economy and the jobs of tomorrow. To be successful beyond school our children need to be creative problem solvers, relationship builders and effective communicators. They need to be able to handle situations proactively instead of reactively. Life can often be challenging and being strong and resilient will help them to pick themselves up from the floor, dust themselves off and not be scared to set new goals and make new plans to achieve what they set out to achieve.
Leader in Me gives children the tools to thrive because it develops Life Ready Leaders who are lifelong learners. Leader in Me also helps teachers become positive role models and helps families build high trust relationships. Watch our UK schools video to find out more.
